Another Inkwater author, another Inkwater win!

This time we’re celebrating Michael Scott Curnes’ book For the Love of Mother, which just recently won the San Francisco Green Book Award for Fiction.

The Green Book Festival is an annual literary competition that honors books that contribute to greater understanding, respect for and positive action on the changing worldwide environment. A panel of judges determined this year’s winners based on the overall writing style and presentation of the work along with the potential of the work to enhance understanding of the environment and its issues.  Last year’s winner in the Green Book Festival fiction category was Margaret Atwood’s The Year of the Flood.

Earlier this month, For the Love of Mother was also named an award winning finalist in the International Book Awards competition in the environmental fiction category.

Fore more on Michael’s book, please see our bookstore. Also, Michael will be interviewed live on CBC Radio Daybreak North on Wednesday morning at 6:40 during the Written Word segment. Only Milo Would Kill to be a Ghostwriter

Published by JSolomon on September 3rd, 2009

9781592994236_cov_COLE.inddInkwater Press announces with diabolical glee the publication of Barry Smith’s Only Milo, a twisted and darkly funny thriller about the publishing industry.

All his life, 62-year-old Milo has been overlooked and underestimated, despite the twelve brilliant manuscripts stockpiled in his closet. Fed up with being a nobody, he emerges from his retirement to become an unseen force in the literary world, covertly publishing his novels in another author’s name.

Milo’s illicit ghostwriting leads him down a path fraught with deception, forgery, theft, and murder. In a world of egotistical, no-talent authors and duplicitous, back-stabbing publishers, he becomes determined to get what he deserves.

“Milo was narcissistic and unpleasant with a strong sense of entitlement. That being said, he was so deliciously unstable that I really enjoyed reading his thoughts,” says the book review website Devourer of Books.

With dark, scathing humor, Barry Smith‘s debut novel holds a grim mirror up to authors, publishers, the media, American mass culture, and, ultimately, itself as it delves into the shadowy side of both the publishing industry and human nature.

Smith, a finance professor at Emporia State University in Kansas, says it was the routine bloodbaths he watched on television that inspired him to write Only Milo.

“I have had TiVo for the last couple of years, and I’ve been watching more CSI, NCIS, and Criminal Minds than ever before. Last fall it really hit me that anyone watching this set of shows witnesses six to ten ‘murders’ every week,” Smith said.

“Watching those shows makes murder seem a fairly normal human activity.”

Take a Sneak Peek at Upcoming Novel Only Milo

Published by JSolomon on May 26th, 2009

milo_cover-resize3Inkwater Press is wickedly delighted to announce the impending publication of the literary noir Only Milo, by first-time author Barry Smith. Advance copies of the book, along with the author himself, will be available this weekend at BookExpo America, booth 4841.

In Only Milo, scheduled for publication in September, Milo is a seemingly unexceptional retiree who enjoys SPAM Reuben sandwiches and makes more on Social Security than he did delivering the Thrifty Nickel. But everything changes when an opportunistic moment turns him into an unseen force in the literary world-not to mention a killer.

Barry Smith, a University of Pennsylvania alum, is available for interviews, readings, and book signings. For more information, please contact Nicole@inkwaterpress.com or visit the Only Milo website.

Press Release: Architect Hanford Yang releases his debut collection of poetry, Endless Threats

Published by JSolomon on February 10th, 2009

9781592993925_cov.inddPortland, OR — February 10, 2009: Career diversification is a term that’s creating an online buzz across the globe. It’s a thoroughly modern concept: follow your diverse interests, and learn how to turn them into complementary careers. Career advisors are increasingly recommending that individuals expand their professional horizons by following their passions.

Hanford Yang could be the poster child for career diversification. Already a well-respected architect who has taught and lectured at the nation’s top architecture schools, Mr. Yang’s debut collection of poetry, titled Endless Threats, was recently published by Inkwater Press. Mr. Yang’s poetry beautifully combines an architect’s sense of structure with the awareness of a poet. For instance, in “Lost,” Mr. Yang writes,

A surreal calm sustains the city.
The buildings stand with
Unabashed dignity and perverse pride.
Beneath a blackness of rain
Flowers quiver on the wet ground.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and M.I.T., Mr. Yang has won multiple awards for his architecture designs. He has lectured and exhibited his works around the world. Mr. Yang’s interest in poetry is rooted in his work; he began writing poetry as a way to understand the true meaning of “being poetic” in architecture.

Mr. Yang is available for interviews by telephone or in person, depending on location. Endless Threats is available through major online retailers including Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, and InkwaterBooks.com.  For more information, or to arrange an interview, please contact Colleen Welch at Colleen@InkwaterPress.com or 503-968-6777.
