S.W. Capps Listed as a Finalist for the Eric Hoffer Award

Published by Vverrill on May 26th, 2011

Here are Inkwater Press, we’re literally running out of creative ways to list our award-winning authors. So here we are again announcing another book that stands above the rest: Train in the Distance by S.W. Capps.

Train in the Distance is a political thriller of sorts, following its protagonist, Stacy, through his first experiences as a journalist. At first, Stacy is seduced by the excitement of his job, but then a series of arsons rips through the state, setting off a cascade of events in which Stacy must face the truth about the fires, his coworkers, crooked cops, and ultimately, the truth about himself.

Less than 10% of nominated books are selected as finalists for this prestigious award. Congratulations to S.W. Capps, and Train in the Distance.

Dina McQueen finds press with Worlds of Change

Published by Vverrill on April 26th, 2011

We are big fans of Dina McQueen’s memoir Finding Aster, and as it turns out, so is everyone else. Dina’s most recent press on the book finds its home on the web page of Worlds of Change, a blog project for Goddard College’s MA program.

The post sets up a nice preview of Dina and her book and highlights the quality of the writing and the heartfelt nature of the memoir. We suggest checking out the post on Worlds of Change. For other recommended reading on Dina and Finding Aster, check out Dina’s blog, which, along with the book, is also growing in popularity. It’s a great supplement to the text because it focuses not only on adoption, but difficult parenting issues and childhood development.

Pacific Book Review covers Me and Bobby McGee

Published by Vverrill on April 12th, 2011

We always knew Chad Coenson’s debut novel, Me and Bobby McGee, was something special, but now the trend is catching on. Pacific Book Review has recently covered Chad’s book and their review is absolutely glowing!

Here are a few excerpts:

Chad Coenson created a witty and wild novel involving booze, women, gambling, kidnapping and yes, sex and violence, plus the daily hangover into a fast moving “guy novel.” He used a cool way with words that only the narration of a man’s inner most thoughts would expose. If this would become a movie, I would envision Chad to cast someone like Uma Thurman as Bobby, the femme fataleas he puts it, with a Mickey Rourke or Bruce Willis (as long as they gave him hair) protagonist, Keesey Chypher. Keesey is an ex-CIA trained assassin turned drunk. The star of the novel is tequila, with the co-star being a beer chaser. Seriously this book is not recommended reading for recovering alcoholics!

This book is a surprise from the start. It’s a great book to throw into your carry-on bag and open on a chaise lounge by a swimming pool or to page while waiting in an airport or on a plane.  If you have a friend graduating school – get him this for a gift. Besides the engulfing enjoyment, it may steer him away from the swinging door entrance to a sleazy local watering hole, especially if the lure of a woman to beautiful to logically be there is baited inside.  In Keesey’s famous words, “Make mine a Jack with a beer chaser.”

The Oregonian Reviews The Ingram Interview

Published by Vverrill on March 29th, 2011

KB Dixon, Oregon Book Award Finalist for A Painter’s Life and Inkwater author, is hard at work promoting his new book The Ingram Interview. The Oregonian recently printed a wonderful review, which does an excellent job of boiling down the book and capturing it’s charm.

The unconventional, fractured narrative has become a calling card for Dixon. “A Painter’s Life,” a 2011 Oregon Book Award finalist for fiction, is portraiture in collage: reviews, journal entries, interviews. “The Sum of His Syndromes” (a 2008 OBA finalist) is a series of notes scrawled in a restroom. “Andrew (A to Z)” renders its storyline via alphabetized topic headings.

Yet “The Ingram Interview’s” fractures cohere into an engaging impression of a man cut adrift from his known world of health, youth, work and family.

Adoption Today Reviews Finding Aster

Published by Vverrill on March 3rd, 2011

As reviews go, this is about as good as it gets. Dina McQueen’s debut work is garnering critical acclaim and as more reviews come in, we can only expect this book will continue to impress.

Here’s an excerpt from Adoption Today’s Review:

Finding Aster— our Ethiopian adoption story, is a fascinating memoir that follows one woman’s journey to motherhood via international adoption. The title could just as easily have been, Finding Dina, for it is truly a memoir of discovery for the author as she relives the life decisions she has made leading up to the maternal evolution to become a mother.

This brutally honest and heartfelt memoir is a valuable resource to people deciding how to grow their families. This compelling story is told in such a dynamic way that those experiencing infertility problems may be inspired to choose a new direction. In addition, for those just starting out on the path to parenthood, McQueen’s journey is sure to offer insight to those who may not have considered adoption.
