Everyone wants good reviews on Amazon, and Evolutionaries: Transformational Leadership: The Missing Link in your Organizational Chart, by Carmen Voilleque and Randy Harrington, received a whopper. The review was written by Lawrence B. Rosenfeld, from the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The review includes, “This book offers an approach that is itself transformative. Consider that the usual approach to assessing good leadership requires little more than an examination of the “bottom line.” Good evolutionary leadership is much more. In a fascinating section on “Meta-Planning,” the authors describe a technique in which an organization’s entire ecosystem–the contexts in which the organization is situated–are brought into the planning process, resulting in plans that have the potential to change not only the organization, but the industry and the community and beyond the community. This is not your usual book on leadership!” Read the full review.

This site interviews writers and provides updates on their publication journeys. Along with questions about The Godling Chronicles, Brian is asked about his approach to writing, what he finds hardest about writing and what he must have when writing (hint: coffee & smokes). Brian also describes the collaboration with his son on developing the plot and other elements of the book. As a true look into his psyche, Brian reveals that if he could have just one super power it would be the ability to spell without the need for Spellcheck.

Father Tom, a parish cat, is the star of J. R. Mackenzie’s book, A Tempation Tale. Father Tom even has a blog. (Who says cats can’t write.) Mackenzie, a freelance writer and former television news reporter, anchor and talk-show host, took some time away from working on her second novel in the series to be interviewed by The Portland Press Hearld. When asked how long it took to write the book, she said, “It took about three years to finalize it. Then, about two years ago, I started to go to writers’ conferences so that I could prepare the novel for its eventual debut. One of the things that is emphasized is social networking. When I got home, I got on Twitter. I tried to find a web designer, which I did. She’s wonderful. She’s an author also, so she’s very patient. Got the website going, got Twitter going. Didn’t do Facebook so much early on. By this time, the manuscript was done, the characters were there. The parish cat, Father Tom — why didn’t I have a blog for him, and then we can start establishing interest in his life and what he’s doing with other cat lovers? I only post once a week. We now have over 100 followers for his blog — cat lovers and Catholics.

In his memoir, Ladder Memories, Inkwater author Mark Ellis recounts his 37-year career as a painter, describing some of more unique jobs and clients he worked with. Mark was recently featured in an extensive Q&A in the Southwest Community Connection, published in Portland, Oregon.

When asked how many houses he painted, Mark said, “The first painting job I had was for a property management company in Berkeley, Calif. I’ll never forget it, because the foreman on the project had the radio turned to the Watergate hearings – the beginning of the end of the Nixon Administration. That was 1973, 37 years ago, so if you figure 50 houses, interior and exterior, per year on average, which is probably low, that’s more than 2,200 homes or businesses.” That’s enough experience to make for some good stories.

Mark summarizes the book by saying, these stories scrape the knuckles and get under the fingernails. I brings authenticity and discovery to my exploration of the experiences of a house painter and to the entrapments, frailties and indomitable spirits of those living and working in the structures I painted. You can buy the book here.

For Larry Postaer, it’s been a time to reflect on the advertising business—prompted in part by his 50-year anniversary in the business, and brought home by the release of his book, “Pickett, Plunkett and Puckett. My 50 Years in Advertising.” Pickett, Plunkett and Puckett were his first “clients” as part of his senior year ad sales curriculum at the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. The Shoot article provides a summary of Postaer’s book and career, and offers how the advertising business has chaged over the years.

The article states, “A lot has changed in Postaer’s 50 years in the ad biz. He noted that the computer has impacted advertising perhaps more than any other industry, “with the exception of NASA and space exploration.” Some of that impact has been positive—for one, it’s meant that ad creatives need to be smarter, with their expertise having to span more than TV, radio and print, extending into the brave new online and social media world, and integrating communication across those platforms.”
